Downtime associated with cylinder replacements can impose a big burden on equipment owners and operators.
But thanks to leading Cat® dealer WesTrac’s unique Cylinder Exchange Program, the long hours lost while repairs are carried out or replacement parts are sourced and delivered could be a thing of the past for NSW and ACT businesses.
Under the program, if a cylinder needs repair or replacement, customers can get in touch with WesTrac, check if a refurbished cylinder is available and have it delivered in a fraction of the time it takes to carry out repairs or source new components.
According to WesTrac Business Development Manager Daniel Moxon, WesTrac has identified and stocks common Cat cylinders to enable faster delivery to site, reduced costs compared to new parts and a significant increase in productivity.
“In most cases if a cylinder needs repair, the turnaround time as a minimum can be anywhere from one to two days, in addition to the time to remove and replace it,” Daniel said.
“With the Cylinder Exchange Program, if a customer needs a cylinder urgently, they can place and receive their order, while having a certain amount of time to send the damaged cylinder to WesTrac for assessment. Then we can determine if it can be refurbished and agree on a final price. It means the customer can have a like-new part fitted and be back to work within hours rather than days.”
Refurbished cylinders can be provided for collection or delivered to site for DIY repairs or offered on a full-service delivery and fitting basis.
Daniel says WesTrac has had the ability to refurbish cylinders and related components for some time, so the Cylinder Exchange Program was a natural extension of workshop services. WesTrac’s Tomago facility is equipped with an array of CNC machinery, has High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) and laser cladding coating capabilities for cylinder rods, cylinder honing benches, cylinder strip benches and all other tools and equipment required to carry out precise cylinder refurbishment.
One of the big advantages is that all refurbished cylinders are machined, repaired, resealed and tested to Caterpillar® specifications, which means WesTrac can provide quality guarantees backed by WesTrac’s 12-month parts and labour warranty.
“That’s not something you get with a lot of repairers,” Daniel said. “Some repairers wouldn’t necessarily have access to the correct seal materials and Cat design specifications, whereas WesTrac is working to the precise Cat specifications and using all Cat genuine parts to carry out repairs.”
According to Daniel, the program is ideally suited to operators that can’t afford machine downtime and may require fast turnaround when unexpected repairs are required.
However, he says operators running preventative maintenance programs should also consider the program as a cost effective and time efficient way to stay on top of requirements.
